Four buses slowly roam Empire City, although these aren't the kind you would want to use for public transit.

Spread out across the metropolis, these vehicles are armored to the teeth and heavily packed with all varieties of machine gun.

Watching from a rooftop is Cole, the electrifying lead character in open-world adventure inFamous, hitting the PlayStation 3 in May.

After dismantling the first three buses, Cole hunts down the final vehicle located across town. Since inFamous doesn't include drivable cars, Cole needs a speedy route to the last bus.

So, Cole rides the rails -- literally. Trains don't work in Empire City either. Using electricity-based powers bestowed upon him following a massive explosion, Cole surfs the train rails and finds that elusive final bus. Mission over.

The adventure was one of four packaged in a demo Sony presented during this year's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Based on the limited experience, inFamoushas the potential to become a thrilling action game.

Cole's powers are centered on electricity, allowing him to zap foes with quick strikes, lob grenade-like bursts or repulse enemies with a shockwave. Some of these attacks sap Cole's strength, forcing him to drain sources of electricity scattered throughout the city to power up. Using the powers is entertaining, especially the shockwave that send enemies flying in the air.

inFamous also emphasizes moral choice. The demo provides a taste of this in the Food Drop mission, in which Cole brings down boxes of food trapped atop a tall structure. Cole must choose whether to let civilians take food or zap them and hoard it for himself. A meter measures your propensity toward good or evil, brandishing you with names like Outlaw or Champion depending on your actions. These decisions also determine which missions will become available to players.

Traversing the city feels reminiscent of both Mirror's Edge and the more recent Spider-Man games. Cole must find small ledges to grasp and scurry up skyscrapers, yet he can ride electric wires and train rails to quickly explore the city as well as attempt jaw-dropping leaps from skyscrapers onto the ground.

Since Cole can grab almost anything in the environment, he exhibits this stickiness to his surroundings. Sometimes, players may want to jump over an obstacle and instead grab onto a lightpost or structure they didn't intend to. That proved a bit frustrating during one intense battle in the demo.

The demo didn't delve too deeply into the moral dilemmas or how developers plan to entice players into exploring Empire City outside the main missions. Also, since players will be granted these incredible powers, will the game be open enough to allow them to cause mayhem if they so choose?

If Sucker Punch, creators of the Sly Cooper series, can deliver a high level of depth in the exploration and create intriguing moral situations, inFamous could become one of the summer's early blockbusters.
