This video is made to show the chinook effect and some of the visual effects of the phenomenom. The video is made up of a number of clips that were filmed at various times of the day on various dates, largely in the fall and winter.

The chinook is a warming wind that blows over the prairies from the Rocky mountains. The air mass is warmed as it is pushed over the mountains from the Pacific due to its compression while passing over the mountains. Before the winds arrive, they are heralded by the appearance of the chinook arch - a gap in the cloud deck in the South West sky. This is where the alto stratus clouds are formed in the lee of the mountains.

A chinook can dramatically increase the temperature over a very short time. In less than an hour, the temperature can go from -20C to +10C even in the middle of a winter night. The effects of a chinook are most striking in winter, but technically they can occur any time of the year.

The views are generally looking South towards Antler Hill and Innisfail, Alberta.

The background music is Adagio in G minor by Albinoni.

The video was filmed on various dates between September, 2007 and January, 2010 at 100x real time.

  • I love the ending, goes perfectly with the song.

  • @mattbjrs Thanks! The video was largely set up around the ending. Although the video is a bit long, the ending is intended as a treat for those who watched it through.

  • Cool... But I think you should do another road trip soon. Something about that Gorge video is always fun lol

  • @mushroomherbs Thanks! And not to worry, there's a few road trip ones in the works. :)

  • @canadianentropy and I though us Brits were obsessed with weather...

  • @astrofranck Thank you very much!

  • @andysoftvideos Thanks! I studied some meteorology in university, but growing up here in Alberta one lives with a lot of bizarre weather. For example, yesterday we had another spring blizzard with heavy wet snow and 90 km/h winds. Weather is a major conversation piece here. Ok, we're a bit obsessed.... :)

  • Nice views. You know way too much about clouds :)
