Educating Ricky: "What's Tomato With You?"

Demonstrating his love of bad pun titles, Karl offered this Educating Ricky segment in order to enrich Ricky and Steve's knowledge of dining "ages ago" in "Briatin and that." Karl claimed that "they" thought tomatoes were poisonous because "they" ate off of lead plates. As a result, after cutting a tomato the acidic juice would make the lead "runny" and would thereby deposit lead into the tomato and poison those eating it. Ricky and Steve felt particularly uneducated after Karl's story, suggesting the moral might be something as pointless as "don't mix lead with tomatoes," or "don't believe these people I've never heard of before." Karl saw educational value in the story because it was a bit weird.

  • This is true I've heard many years ago people used to think Tomatoes were poisonous

  • @Mfranzusan3014 ----Lead poisoning is not one of the reasons the roman empire fell bwahaha!! If that was the case, then nearly every other civilization at that time would have fell... I think Karl is actually referring to Britain (as he said) because they not only used lead plates and containers... But also lead makeup and everything... And their empire didn't fall to it ahaaaa

  • this sounds a lot like ancient rome. lead was used for everything, even a sweetener. lead decanters for wine, lead goblets to drink from etc. when romans became sick from what we now consider "lead poisoning" the cure... was more lead! and that boys and girls is one of the lesser known reasons why the roman empire fell. lol.

  • Was the tomato the only acidic food that they had during the period in time when they used lead plates or were there others they had access to? If they did, did they also think those foods were poisonous?

  • I like the time (length) of this clip....

  • Yeah, I guess it's a case of so many of his monkey news being absolutely bullshit that Ricky stopped believing him even when he was telling the truth.

  • Yeah, the tomato and lead story is true.
