In April 1941, the US Navy Bureau of Aeronautics began a program to study the feasibility of remotely controlled unmanned bomb-carrying gliders. These gliders were called Glombs for "Glider-Bombs". The Glomb was designed to be towed into action, and after release the bombardier would use a TV camera in the Glomb's nose to direct it to the target via radio frequency commands.
