  • Oh, I know that is the point he's trying to make. But my point is that he's just twisting Porters theories to mean something they don't. Clever way to «refute» Porter, and thus launching himself as THE strategyguru. Great way to increase booksales.

  • @ungogdum Oh come on. It isn't fair to attribute Mintzberg's intentions to celebrity and sales. I've read both Mintzberg and Porter and they are both keen minds helping to make sense out of complexity. It's interesting - was considering today that one might argue from this case clip that the evolutionary approach to strategy led to a strong industry position due to the technology licensing environment in which Pilkington operated.

  • He looks like he is sleepy.

  • @ungogdum Indeed.

  • @armando8610 What the fuck dude?

  • @ungogdum It is the perspective of Porter's model that has a limiting effect on the application of strategy. That is the point Mintzberg is making here. Which i think is very true.

Application in the PROCESS of operations such as production, sales, marketing and so forth can derive whole scale strategies, and if he was to go on, he would argue heavily in favour of creativity and craft needed to come to these ends. So if modelling strategies, these concepts should be central.

  • emm... errr

Obviously a few misunderstandings on Mintzbergs behalf.

Mr. Porters ideas on the five forces and the generic strategies does not at all rule out the persue of creative and potentially strategycally important production process. In fact, the ideas put forward by mr Porter in his book "competitive strategy" actually encourage exploiting such possibilities.
