The Dalai Lama was enthroned age 5 in Lhasa Tibet in February 1940. Since then there has been 68 years of unelected rule in which the Tibetan (and since 1959 the Tibetan exile community) has had ONE political and religious leader whose decisions can never be questioned.

  • What's the point though? The WSS's own book shows that Dalai Lamas do not necessarily follow the practices and policies of their predecessors. Also according to the book, HHDL is sabotaging efforts for Tibetan independence so it's unlikely Tibet will be free in this lifetime. So why bother uniting the four schools if (a) he won't be able to enjoy the benefits of it in Tibet (b) his successor might just undo all of the work he has done?

  • That's a little OTT. He may oppress his people, and not live up to his "cuddly image, but a least he doesn't kill people systematicaly.

  • The Dalai Lama has used his political power to ban a spiritual practice. Buddhist monks have been expelled, lay people ostracized, statues have been smashed, temples destroyed, books burned, practitioners' houses attacked, and even death threats issued in a persecution that resembles a medieval witch hunt. No one can oppose the Dalai Lama in the Tibetan exile community. This is the horrible hidden truth behind the Dalai Lama's charm in the West.

  • What the present Dalai Lama really wants is for himself to become the leader of all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, and to make people throughout the world follow only a tradition of his own that he has newly created. Doing this will naturally destroy the pure lineages and blessings of the Nyingma, Sakya, Kagyu and Gelug traditions; this will be a great loss. For this reason the Western Shugden Society encourages people to stop taking the drug of Lama Policy.

  • I don't see why people feel sorry for Tibetans when they have politically tied their hands.

  • I like the definition of a dictator. The dalai lama fits it perfectly.

Why is he tolerated by his people? Because they feel they have no other hope....so very very sad.
