In this video I show the salt marshes near Heislerville in Maurice River Township, Cumberland County, just off the southern edge of the Pine Barrens. The area is a point of interest on the NJ Coastal Heritage Trail. The little parking area and wildlife viewing platform are in the middle of this aerial view: http://tinyurl.com/yjfszcn

  • Thanks so much for sharing this video. I always enjoyed coming to see the different parts of the Delaware Bay, especially the lighthouses. East Point light is not too far away from here. I was there back in September. I enjoyed visiting small towns like Fortescue, Gandys Beach and Reeds Beach. Gonna try and get to Sea Breeze and Thompsons Beach this weekend. Thanks again for sharing!

  • Glad you enjoyed this! Unfortunately the new seawall at Seabreeze has begun to fail, miserably. Beach Avenue is closed again, I'm pretty sure. It's a terrible shame.

  • That is quite a large marsh. Interesting how quickly the marsh grew in over the abandoned portion of the road. I was at a similar marsh in Cheesequake State Park, but I didn't see any birds. We have Red Winged Blackbirds on our beachlands here on LI, I've seen them at Robert Moses State Park. So the pine barrens pretty much extends to the southern tip of NJ. That's quite a trip south from your area, I imagine.

  • I believe there are thousands of acres of marsh along the Delaware Bay/River in Salem, Cumberland and Cape May Counties. I think it took me about an hour to get there. On the Cape May Peninsula, the Pine Barrens goes pretty far down, but not all the way. That would be the southern tip over there. Yeah, so that's how vast our Pine Barrens is.

  • My sailboat got struck by lightning and sank there back in '98, on the shore of the ghost town formerly known as Thompson's Beach... what a night that was.

  • Excellent vid. Cool to here the history of that spot. Thanks for your dedication to our Pinelands.
