@roaklin Cheers for that, I'll keep an eye open.

@roaklin The last I read of the Maine(some time ago I must admit) they had put it down to magazine explosion. I must re-read.
The missing parts? The Navy have examined that wreck every 2 years. Technology can find bits of a torpedo in Hoods wreck. It must pose the question why can no parts be found
I, like most, understood USS ward sunk the only midget sub to enter the harbour. If you say otherwise I shll have to re-read on that.

@SuperAncientmariner I have read the reports of the Irish possible being behind the Oak's sinking, they ring as hollow as the theory that the USS Maine was blown up by a Spanish mine in Cuba. No trace of the torpedo being found also don't mean it isn't there. Just like for decades nobody though min subs made it into Pearl during the dec 7 raid but proof has been found they did and did cause damage.

@roaklin Good description.
Re the Oak. . They had stored that day and the store loaded went to, among other places the paint store (The location of the first explosion) The wreck explosion sites are blown out, unlike a torpedo hit. No parts of a torpedo have been found. Prien's log records give atmospheric and weather conditions at odds with what they were. He describes ships at anchor as in Luftwaffe photos taken just before his mission. In fact ,the Flow was .....
it was bad thanks to reports from the Linge, which is why the RAF were sent to finish it
Hood was already in service and was due for refit. Bismarck's steering should have been sorted out before being commisioned. Also the time delay taken up in rectifying would have allowed S&G to be made ready to be part of Lutjens' command. 8x15", 18x11" and 8x 8" would have taken some stopping.

@SuperAncientmariner Lutgerns didnt want to gamble on the losing of the longer nights in the arctic to reach the shipping lanes by waiting on the other ships,& the fact S & G where already damaged by air raids the longer the Bismarck sat in port the more risk of being damaged. Bismarck's builders looked at the stern after her trials & the time to refit her would have delayed her 6 more months denying a badly needed warship that much longer in time of war a decision that was over ruled.

@roaklin From their point of view it was bad call then. Instead of loosing 6 months they lost the ship. C'est la Guerre.

@SuperAncientmariner I agree it was a bad call but it also amounts to hind sight being twenty twenty, we also not under the the pressure of telling a Mad man, his newest battleship wasnt ready yet while he fighting a war. The evidence for the minis subs was just discovered in the last year or so, National Geographic i think did a documentary about them it quite a show. It might even be on youtube somewhere.

apart from the Oak, the Pagasus and Iron Duke, empty. Given all this there has long been a theory that Irish sympathisers, with German backing, MAY have been involved in the loading of stores containing explosives, Priens adventure being a cover. (read Black October). I have read Priens "biography". Interesting to say the least. There is enough to cast doubt on the exploit, so don't dismiss it so sarcastically.
They may not have known the extent of Tirpitz's damage but they knew.....

@SuperAncientmariner They knew she was damaged but they still saw her as a threat, that military wise is a world of difference then how they would look at a sunken ship, therefore still giving T military value far beyond her status allowed. As for the Irish sinking Oak, it wouldn't be the first time some group was trying to take credit/or get blamed for something they didn't do. Look at Spain and the USS Maine despite evidence showing a coal fire sank her Spain was blamed.
