Jim Gates began teaching in 1971 as a music teacherAmong his accomplishments are the 2007 Edublogs award for the Best Resource Sharing Blog. He has won National Gold and Bronze awards for a column he wrote for Child Guide Magazine. He was presented with the 2009 Pioneer Award by the PA Educational Communications and Technology (PAECT). And, his blog was listed by the Top Online University Review as one of the Top 50 Blogs for E-learning Tools and Tips. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Hopefully the tide will turn back as presentations like this reveal that the NCLB act is not improving education. This growing trend of decentralization of education is our children's best hope. Truly the school of no walls that we all talked about years ago pre NCLB, but never quite accomplished. Technology is a tool for student driven learning, student centered collaborative learning, which NCLB outright squashes. Kudos to Mr. Gates for a inspiring presentation.
