From the concert of May 9th, 1968 in Orchestra Hall, Chicago. Jean Martinon conducts a great performances of La Mer. Has the Chicago Symphony ever sounded better, particularly the strings?

Above all it is the freedom of expression, the varied phrasing and eloquent rhythm that distinguished this performance. Martinon was a composer of distinction - with a creative mind that understood the true nature of Debussy's music..
