Columbo made this record a few weeks after his twentieth birthday--his primary gig was violinist with Gus Arnheim's band (you can hear Russ's violin solo at the end of the piece).

In cutting this Jolson cover he's not yet found his true voice, but this early disc gives us a foretaste of a genius coming into his own.

BACK IN YOUR OWN BACK YARD

That bird with feathers of blue
Is waiting for you
Back in your own backyard

You'll see your castles in Spain
Through your window pane
Back in your own backyard

Oh you can go to the East
Go to the West
Someday you'll come
Weary at heart
Back where you started from

You'll find your happiness lies
Right under your eyes
Back in your own backyard

  • RR, I'm enjoying my dining experience at your restaurant. This is a serving of Profiteroles!

Thank you for this delightful Russ Columbo heavenly desert!

  • The espresso will be right out, genia!

Neat mid-twenties vibe to this disc--Russ borrows some of Jolie's phrasing but makes the interpretation his own. Fun to hear his fiddle work, as well.

  • Good enough but doesn't it show how greatly he developed in the next 6 years?

  • Rose and Dreyer originally wrote this as "Nobody's Fault But Mine"- once Al Jolson heard it, he insisted on a "cut" of the song {with him as "co-composer"}, and the lyrics rewritten, guaranteeing a hit as soon as he introduced it....and it was!

  • great tune,thx 4 sharing!

  • Arnheim is Supurb.

    Columbo, not so much.

    Great Song.

  • O)HHHHH :):):): ...NICE !

  • Excellent!, Hard to believe he was only 26 when he tragically died, just think what could have been. Great posting.
