On video, and on this 35mm print, the credits of the film were originally awkwardly cut off to avoid showing production company credits, which presumably changed during production. I've corrected this by adding a whole bunch of new credits and extending the sequence.

Largely directed by Richard Williams (until the budget very obviously ran out), this is by no means a great film - in fact it's rather a mess - but one I watched often as a kid. Williams of course went on to do do much bigger things (The Thief and the Cobbler, Roger Rabbit).

This is my own restoration from a 35mm print provided by collector KA. Transfer to video was funded by Patrick McCart and the wonderful members of the orangecow.org forum. The film is not on DVD. A few seconds here and there at the beginning of the film were restored from VHS.

The music is by Joe Raposo, best known for doing delightful work on Sesame Street, but Joe had a bit too much control over the product in this case, and there are simply too many songs, and not enough script.

It's also a very strange and surreal film, which is only exacerbated by the fact that beautiful animation, such as Art Babbit's Camel With the Wrinkled Knees, and Williams' animation of Grandpa and "No Girl's Toy", sits alongside animation of often much lesser quality, making it seem a hodgepodge. This film seemed to catch certain fine animators at the end of their careers, and most others at the beginning of their careers- some went on to do amazing things.

This film played frequently on The Disney Channel back in the day and has lodged in the memories of many a child of the 80s.

However, it's never been seen on video in its original widescreen Cinemascope format, which really helps you appreciate the detail in some of the animation (and the lack of detail in other animation). It's certainly one of the major animated films of the 1970s and, I think, worth watching and remembering.

  • I think they should re-release this film to theaters. It may be a dated film but it makes people feel good. Right now the world could use a little feeling good for a change.

  • I loved Andy's voice. I wonder if he did anything else.

  • @Stephen10528 In what way did it make sense?

  • I like These voices for Ann and Andy the best. All the other voices for them in other versions just don't sound right for them.

  • eso fue casi muy drogado pero....admito que es buena y bonita la pelicula

  • @ThisisSteve Why didn't the story make sense?

  • I loved it, this is weird, strange and the animation amazin (wat i look for in movies) and andys singin vocie was so beauitful and were all the songs were fun to watch and listen to. ps, mr loony is unhealthy to be around.

  • thats be so tragic (but funny) if she just looked at the camel and said, straight faced, " Thought I left this shit outside...?"

  • I loved this <3 It may have been weird, strange, and just down right different for a kids movie, but the music was amazing, the animation was actually very beautiful, and even though the plot was kind of scary for a kids movie, it made a lot of sense if you think about it. For me, it was a nice awesome and sort of epic kids movie that I would love to own on DVD, and would love to watch again. Oh yeah and the many many songs were all actually really good. I loved it and would love to see again<3
