in other words, it is better to have at least 15% text on your index. There are some free tools that will say the % your homepage has.

For SEO you need to have something for the bots to crawl so yeah, you need text. But the flip side of that is usability. Few things turn users off more than coming to a landing page saturated with densely written prose.
The trend these days is Keep It Simple for Stupid.
So you need to strike a balance. It depends on what other SEO
factors you have going for you and what your target audience is.

I hope most SEO's have tested this question enough to already know what Matt was going to say.
BTW, @DataTrack153 home page content is NOT "about getting googlebot into your site". All search bots show up at your home page regardless of content via web links.
It's showing them good content (when they arrive) that you want to focus on. 300-500 words of non-boiler plate content is a good start.
