Philadelphia Zoo Elephants Fascinated Boy

We won't be seeing elephants, or hearing exclamations like "Elephants are my FAVORITE animal!" at the Philadelphia Zoo again, at least for a few years.

The last two remaining elephants, Bette and Kallie were moved to the Pittsburgh Zoo's International Conservation Center July 8, 2009.

The International Conservation Center is not a sanctuary. The elephants at the Center receive the same kind of excellent care that elephants in all U.S. zoos receive, with a daily routine of feeding and care they can be accustomed to and rely on.

I do hope elephants return to the Philadelphia Zoo soon. I miss seeing them and so do a lot of other visitors.

There's a certain fascination about elephants. They are so much like us, yet very different. Zoos can and should play a role in helping people love them and saving them.

@IrishMusicIsAwesome I agree. And one of the most important ways zoos can play a role is by exhibiting elephants. When zoo visitors see elephants up close, they are in awe. And when they have a chance to see the same elephants over and over again, they get to know the elephants as individuals. I think that is the first step in inspiring people to want to save and protect all elephants.

I supported the decision to move the elephants, but I was hoping they could move to the Tennessee Elephant Sanctuary or PAWS.

@awesomeH2O So I guess you and I are both very disappointed with the current situation.

As I may have stated before, I always like to see elephants as individuals and learn their specific individual personalities and physical characteristics. Reading the book Elephant Memories by Cynthia Moss has helped me do this. Even though I decided not to visit the Zoo since I was around 11, I return to these videos to really study their behaviors and individual personalities.
