Natural treatments for Epstein Barr, mononucleosis and glandular fever. Alternative approaches to treating the Epstein Barr Virus, including the seven mistakes people can make when recovering. Video by natural therapist Elizabeth Noble. Mistake 1 - Not resting your body Firstly the most common mistake people make is not resting when they are first diagnosed with Epstein Barr. Most people feel pretty bad when they are diagnosed. Symptoms can include extreme fatigue, sore throat, swollen glands, muscle aches, headaches, nausea and sometimes fever. Despite these debilitating symptoms some people try and struggle on and keep going to work, school or college, running a household, rushing around after their family. Mistake 2 - Not getting adequate sleep Your body specifically needs good quality sleep when recovering from Epstein Barr.It is during sleep that your body produces a hormone called growth hormone. Growth hormone is your body's repair hormone. Now going to bed too late, this is after about 11 p.m. your body produces less growth hormone. So please make sure you are in bed and asleep by 11 p.m. Get into a routine of unwinding before bed. Having a relaxing bath, reading quietly in bed, meditating or enjoying a chamomile tea before bed are all good ideas you can try. Mistake 3 - Lack of adequate water Now the third mistake, and this is probably the most common mistake I see in my patients, is not drinking enough water to flush out the viruses and toxins from your system. I realize that in some people the throat can get really sore and inflamed which makes it hard to swallow. In these cases a hot lemon and honey tea can help soothe the throat and make drinking easier. Alternatively sucking on ice cubes can numb the pain and get the fluids into your body.

  • Hello, I was diagnosed with mono on June 16th and I start band camp on June the 20th. Do you think it would it be okay for me to play my snare drum if it is on a stand as long as I do not push myself at all or break a sweat? We will be inside in air conditioning, and I have not been very tired or sore. Could playing my drum affect my spleen or liver if I am not wearing it? Thank you for your informative video!

  • Hi there,

Sorry to hear you have been diagnosed with mono. The spleen and liver can become enlarged in the first few weeks after diagnosis however I think playing your snare drum on a stand should be OK. Don't overdo things - get plenty of rest, eat well and drink plenty of fluids.

    Good luck!

  • I was diagnosed with mono three weeks ago and I've had pain in the spleen area even though I haven't done anything strenuous. Is this normal when you have mono?

  • Hi,

Spleen enlargement is common in the first 3 or 4 weeks after a mono diagnosis. This can cause pressure and discomfort in the abdominal region. Hot packs or warm baths may relieve the pain as can anti-inflammatory foods and nutrients. It isadvisable to avoid strenuous exercise and contact sports until you get the all clear from your doctor.

  • i was diagnosed yesterday witn mono and i cant sleep i can barely swallow and my body is weak so i can barely keep my balance

  • Hi there,

Sorry to hear you are feeling so awful. In the acute stage of mono it is best if you can rest your body, drink plenty of fluids (or dissolve some ice cubes in your mouth if you are having difficulty swallowing) and get onto some immune-boosting supplements like vitamin C, zinc and herbs. Hot chicken broth, lemon and ginger tea, and fresh vegetable juices are excellent foods when recovering.

    Hope you feel better soon.

    Elizabeth

  • @monocures hi, i have been disgnosed with mono about 4 weeks ago, i seemed to get btter but then it got just as bad as it was at first. my doctor said i had a light case so i just have bad heaches, chillz, loss of apatite, and tired. what should i do ? i start school tomorrow.

  • You are beautiful person inside and out. The world needs more people like you and I. You have helped me tremendously and have calmed my nerves as now my sore throat is almost gone. I'm lucky to get this at age 17 and not a later age where my body would have more trouble fighting this virus. I'm drinking plenty of water and trying new herbal teas and such. I can feel myself getting better I have had this for 10 days now. I see myself making a full recovery in less then two weeks, still kids itch

  • Thank you, Elizabeth! I might give these a try. I had a sonar done on my spleen yesterday morning and I'm happy to say that the girl who did the sonar said my spleen was normal. If my spleen is normal, I don't know why I still keep having pains in that area. My doctor is supposed to call me Monday to let me know the results.
