First model marine steam engine

Twin cylinder slide valve marine steam engine run on compressed air. My first attempt which took around a years worth of weekends here and there to put together. Built from plans as published in model marine steam by stan bray. Just got the boat to build!

how do you make a good slide valve with little friction?

Hi, I don't know if this is the recommended way to acheive a tight friction free valve set up, but it worked for me.

The valve and port faces where milled flats as accuratley as possible. Then a fine abrasive paper was used to hone the surfaces ( beware though to use a figure 8 pattern on a very flat surface). Then when built everyting was a little stiff so I introduced a little Brasso in the oil this got thhings running real smooth.

i wish they had fully machined marine steam engine this style for sale, because only having a drill press limits you to certain types of models.
