What safety reasons? These things have run since over a hundred years ago.

The basic problem is that there is no applicable safety standard. They wanted to use the laws for Cranes to certificate this one, i.e. stretch in the chain, measured every 6 months. Actually, cracks were found in the frames of some carriages and no company was prepared to repair them (or even let their engineers in the shaft). Such a shame. Ericsson have now closed their offices in Beeston and the building is now empty.
