also called Wipeout 2097, this is footage of me trying to play on a tiny viewing screen while I record it! This cost me about £25 off ebay from Japan a few years ago but seems to go for a lot more now

  • It seems slower than it actually is? At least playing the original, its buttery smooth. I believe it uses the same engine too. Then again, I'm in america, perhaps the japanese and pal versions were slightly slower? As in the case (but inverse) of Doom in japan vs the US.

  • @RJTamm93 - the video capture card I used to 'film' this, can only read a 50Hz PAL signal - I do not have a card that can utilise 60Hz NTSC, so I used a 50/60Hz switch I have fitted to the console to change the signal to 50Hz (my Saturn is a white Japanese one) the videos look slower because here in the UK anything we have running on 50Hz will run a small percenatge slower than stuff from the USA and Japan

  • slow

  • @nooblet911 Yah it's certainly not the Playstation version, but it was still pretty awesome when released on the Saturn :)

  • This is the PAL version, right? The Japanese NTSC release is the one that goes for around $50 these days.

I read something about the NTSC format having a better framerate than PAL, though I'm not sure why. Is it the 50Hz that does it? This version does look a bit slower than what I'm used to here in the U.S.

  • This is footage from Wipeout XL which is NTSC - I also used to have Wipeout 2097 on the Saturn too but tbh PAL 2097 was so utterly well-done, there were no real noticeable differences between the two. I got rid of almost every single one of my PAL games, incl 2097 many years ago.

XL (Japanese) does seem to go for an awful lot on eBay, yes. Thanks for commenting dude

  • @nooblet911 - Good point, although that was a few years later. I think at the time, the development team working on the port (Lobotomy) experienced difficulty with the PS. But then, they were one of the very few third party developers who preferred working with the Saturn and could squeeze more juice out of it than most, and since making 3D games for the Saturn was far more complex, their toolset didn't work well with the PS. Still Shenmue is proof of how powerful the Saturn really was...

  • I don't think the ps couldn't handle quake tho. it got quake II after all.

  • @nooblet911 - They did towards the end. Only in the Saturn's twilight years did its full potential become apparent. That was proven when the Saturn nailed Quake and the Playstation version had to be canned because it couldn't handle it. Shame, I loved the Saturn, I had both consoles and preferred it to the Playstation. Although the Wipeout games were far better on the PS in my opinion, but that was mainly down to soundtrack and sharper graphics, they played pretty much the same.

  • funily enough, the saturn is supposed to be able to push more polygons (or quadrilaterals in this case) than ps1, but no game actually maxed the two cpus.

  • Wow i didn't know they had this on saturn. I'm a dimwit. Lol.

  • Well thank you for posting a really decent video of it! I intend on buying it for the Saturn someday if I can find it again. Hopefully it will never become as expensive as Panzer Dragoon Saga, which set me back a little over $200.

If Shenmue was released as a Saturn game, I'm sure that would command around $200 today as well.
