'Rounds': A vocal process intervention

By Voice Laboratory Ensemble

Sunday 29th May

The Site of the Old Chain Pier, above Madeira Drive, Brighton.

Founded by Amy Cunningham in 2009 as part of the Voice Laboratory Network, the Voice Laboratory Ensemble are a group of people interested in working together to experiment with the voice and its relationship to different sites and contexts. The ensemble group is not fixed but currently involves professional artists, and students from the Performance and Visual Art programme, University of Brighton.

During 2011 the Voice Lab Ensemble have developed a process of singing 'rounds' in significant locations. This sung round is devised entirely by the vocal ensemble. Each vocalist contributes a vocal phrase, which is added together to create a vocal line. The ensemble in the form of a 'round' sings this vocal line.

On 29th May 2011 the 'rounds' were presented at the site of the old The Chain Pier on Brighton Seafront. This is a site, which was once a place of leaving and of returning by boat. It is now a site that resonates acoustically and which the Voice Lab ensemble, have responded poetically with the tide-like structure of their vocal composition.
The 'rounds' were presented as part of 'Anniversary -- an act of memory Act 31: a collective and multilingual recitation from memory of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, by Monica Ross and Co-recitors, Brighton Festival 'Freedom Picnic', 29th May 2011.

As part of the 'vocal rounds', Voice Lab Ensemble recited Article 13 from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

1.Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each State.

2. Everyone has the right to leave any country, including their own, and to return to their country.

Vocalists:
Amy Cunningham,
Helen Dewhurst,
Bethan Graham Dolman,
