  • Any suggestions for a sewing machine, perhaps $300 or less? If not a brand/ model, maybe a few of your 'won't live without' and 'really love' capabilities/ features? Thanks, Teresa

  • @50tmack - Hi Teresa - Hmmm...$300 or less...I would personally go and see a Viking dealer and see what their bottom line, mechanical model is running these days. I purchased a Viking Prelude in 2005 and it was a really good machine. I know they discontinued the Prelude line, but I'm sure they still have a very basic mechanical model that won't be outrageously expensive.

As for features, I like having a knee lifter and automatic needle down function, but that's pretty much it!

    Good luck!

    Leah

  • Leah, you are a riot! I thought your modified free motion foot was something fancy you bough... to hear that you just did it yourself with a pair of pliers cracks me up! I am too scared to wreck the one I've got, but maybe I'll see if I can get a spare off eBay and try that myself. I'm new enough to free motion that it hasn't gotten on my nerves yet, but I do trust your professional opinion on that one. :) Great vid, as always!

  • Thanks Montyollie! I know what you mean, but I searched high and low for a open toe Juki foot for this machine and couldn't find one so into the toolbox I went!

Bernina has a wonderful advantage in this because they offer a terrific open toe darning foot that I absolutely love, but I'm not willing to go back to a 6.5" throat plate.

(sigh) If only a manufacturer would come out with my dream machine. Hint Hint HINT!

    HA! That'll be the day!

  • If you don't own a Juki, you can buy a open-toe free motion foot. Try Sears and other online stores (ebay).

  • This is really great!! Thank you soooo much! Yeah, that foot really sucks.. I"m pretty happy with the plastic darning foot that comes with Janome because it's clear AND open.. If they could just make them a little thinner.. really.. why can't a quilter get together with one of these companies... . FOR REALZ

  • Leah,

    Is there a difference in a TL 98QE from a TL 98Q?

  • I'm so glad that I found you on uTube & your blog...just love the way you do your FMQ...thanks for sharing your expertise.
