This is a follow up to my Danvers State Hospital Retelling video. Included: A closer look at the construction, identifying the buildings, the cost, overcrowding, more on the patients, Danvers State's connection to Batman, hydrotherapy, life in general in an insane asylum. Did you know Danvers State had it's own newspaper called Hill Topics? Check out the video to find out more.
*Here's some cool stuff that didn't make the video: -In the early 1900's some patients were placed in tents on the grounds of the hospital in the summertime and during periods of warm weather for treatment & recreation, and to alleviate overcrowding. Tuberculosis patients were also placed outside in tents to protect other patients from infection.
-Danvers State didn't have a dining room until 1897. The first meal accommodated 522 patients and 64 employees. The dining room was on the second floor behind the central building. 120 by 80 feet it had air and light on three sides. Dinner was an hour long and breakfast and lunch were a half hour. No food was placed on the table until all patients were seated.

  • WOW! And I thought I knew a lot about Danvers! Outstanding research, my friend. You must be very intelligent. :D

  • @burmiester1 Thank You. It was a labor of love really. I tried to find out as much about DSH that wasn't available online as I could, making this one of the most thorough videos you can find.

  • great video! what is the name of the first song?

  • @fullretreat The first song is Renholdër by A Perfect Circle. I'm worried youtube will make me change the audio because of copyright. It's happened before. Hopefully not on this one.

  • Colonel, nice video. These take a lot of work to put together. By the way some of your pictures I took for Tyler LaVite but you can use them.

I have many relics of DS Hospital if you want to see them. I worked there in 1974 & '75 and had a pass-key so I could get into any ward I wanted. I even had the key to the tunnels and sub-tunnels that existed under the hill.

Too bad they tore down the Medical "Bonner" Building that would have made great apartments. I live at Avalon Danvers now by the way.

  • @pompom11 That's awesome thanks for all your comments on my videos. I appreciate the good feedback. Any DSH stuff you have I'd love to check out. What kind of work did you do at the hospital?

  • Absolutley wonderful job start to finish, love the use of "November Hotel" by Mad Season, the music choice was excellent. I have worked in hospitals and dealt with the "mentally ill" and it breaks your heart. I have seen so much mal-treatment of loving human beings while getting "treatment" that it forever haunts me how people can treat one another with no compassion or regard..

  • How did I get here? I was looking for the 3-headed Hillary UFO goat! JK, Sorry. Danvers was one of the most well-preserved and beautiful Kirkbrides. Such a shame to see most of it torn down. Your video is very well done and I appreciate your work!

  • @pompom11 What position where you at the hospital?

  • One day, back in the 1960's, I went for a ride up there with my Mom's friend, so he could get his paycheck. By the way. He told me that a patient went at him with a wired clothes hanger. We lived in Woodvale and I was re-cooping from leukemia. When we drove up to the building, there was a guy hanging out the window. Boy was that scary! He was shouting out something! So sad, they ruined it. Money is power and power leads to greed.
