"Research" is a transparent cover story which allows them to exploit the anti-whaling law loophole. Collecting the meat to sell is the PRIME goal.
Note: What kind of research has a "quota"? The japanese themselves said "The Sea Shepherds are interfering with our PROCESSING of a whale on our FACTORY ship." (not "research of a whale on a science vessel"). Fact: In April of 2010, what was the foremost charge Captain Bethune was arrested for?: "Obstruction of business".

Whale fundamentalist needs to their activities to advertise as it it is a big issue to earn money. They just advertise as it is a big issue.
