National Crime Records Bureau says over 200,00 farmers in Punjab have committed suicide since 1997 due to the fact that they are heavily in debt and unable to repay their lenders.
Punjabi farmers are also going through a water crisis in which the Indian government has restricted water rights for irrigation, making it extremely inefficient and expensive for farmers to maintain their crops and land.
The Government has also allowed for the usage of unregulated pesticides and fertilizers to counterbalance the low productivity resulting in major health problems in the people of Punjab.
Saint Soldier & Sukhraj have written and performed this track in hopes of raising global awareness of this issue.

The liberalisation of the Indian economy (exposing rural farmers to the global market), the reduction of Tariffs on agricultural imports and the the withdrawal of much needed State welfare and subsidies has forced farmers to seek alternatives via debilitating debt cycles. On top of this the state has strongly encouraged the switch from subsistence farming to export led farming. Which opens the sector to foreign domination from Multinational Corporations. Not Religion. Fuck Capitalism

@tupacriz that's a pretty stupid assumption. What makes you think that? The Christian and Muslim population percentage have been increasing while the Hindu and Sikh percentage have been on the decline in India. If anything, Hindus are secular people. Yes there were some riots but which country had total peace?

Farmer suicides have been happening in all parts of India. But because some states like Punjab, Andhra Pradesh are mainly agricultural, you see more suicides here.

In the little villages of Chotian and Kurna Kalan (Punjab, India) the farmers cooperative society registered 25 suicides under young farmers in the last seven years. They drunk pesticides to end their lives.

Toxic Tears tells the personal stories of those farmers who have been negatively affected by the Green Revolution project in the Punjab. It shows how global decisions are adversely affecting the very local. A revolution with no blessing.
