"Song of Love, Song of Death" by Charles-Valentin Alkan, played by Ronald Smith. Unlike Chopin, the names of Alkan's etudes were given by the composer himself. It's a beautiful, Schubert-eqsue piece of music with a radical-for-the-time ending. I wish he recorded all twelve etudes from Op. 35, but at least he's done the last three, and also the slightly notorious No. 5, "Allegro Barbaro." Hope you enjoy!

  • that finale ravages the whole piece!!

  • @MusDisa95 Because the ending deals, our character dies!

  • So beautiful! And it doesn't get boring or hard to follow. I'm going to listen to it a lot more now.

  • @WinsomeAllegretto Have you heard Mark Viner's recording? It's my favorite.

  • Exquisite music, beautilfully played! Why isn't Alkan known and performed more? The unexpected ending takes one quite by surprise.

  • @amanderj I agree. This is a very nice work indeed, with a surprising ending (but it goes along perfectly with the title of the piece).
