Linguist and author, Antonio Graceffo takes us into his ESL classroom in Tainan, Taiwan to reveal his semester-long, unified ESL project. Over a period of four months, Antonio lead his 6th grade students through reading various versions of the Tom Sawyer story, writing a summary, then writing their own script for a play. The students made sets, props and puppets and eventually made a 23 minute Tom Sawyer puppet movie. In this way, the students experienced first hand, the basic concepts taught in their writing textbook: characters, settings, plot, scenes, props, dialogue and narrator. These students will never forget any of these concepts, because they lived them.
The program took students through all four basic skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The students also learned movie making and presentation skills. By the semester finale, not only had the students learned a tremendous amount of real English, which was necessary to produce the movie, they also each received a keepsake in the form of a DVD of the Tom Sawyer movie they had made.
