My name is Randy Wolf. Thats my father, Frank.
Hardworking working man. Pinched pennies til they squealed.

So begins David Budbills A Song for my Father.

Lost Nation Theater kicks off its 2010 season with the world premier of Vermonts most popular poet-playwright David Budbills moving new work: A Song for My Father April 22—May 9.

Budbill says A Song for my Father is about growing old; about how lonely Frank is, and how guilty Randy feels because he hasn't taken care of his father in his old age. Its about women and their various attitudes toward men and about men and their various attitudes toward women; its about the meaning of marriage; about memory and about class-consciousness in America. But mostly A Song for my Father is about a father and son, about the attachments and conflicts between them.

Is the play autobiographical? Budbill says no although he admits the original inspiration springs from his own experience, the writing process alters Everything. In A Song for my Father, Budbill (author of Judevine) plays with the present, memory, and humor like soloists in a jazz combo trading riffs, to let the story soar.

And its a story many can relate to: a son, facing the long-distance challenges of caring for his aging dad also hopes to bridge the emotional distance between them. Father and son confront the past, how irritable they get with each other and how much they love each other, making Frank & Randy a tough and tender pair.

Lost Nation Theaters world premier production is directed by professional theater veteran Andrew Doe. Andy has been working with David on the play for several years. Doe sees the play as a memory, with characters coming & going, memories being played out, almost as in a dream. And finds it unexpectedly funny.

The cast, handpicked by Budbill and Doe, features Vermonts most popular actors, several of whom have been involved in the script's development. John D Alexander is the son, Randy, and Robert Nuner is his father Frank. John (seen in LNTs STONE, and The Tempest) deftly captures Randys frustration and vulnerability. Nuner was featured in LNTs david budbills Judevine as well as STONE. His natural warmth & finely etched work enhance Franks humor and humanity. The women in their lives are played by Tara Lee Downs (Love Letters) and Ruth Wallman (A Little Night Music, Lost in Yonkers, and Collected Stories).
Cozy and casual, elegant and professional, Lost Nation Theater has won numerous awards for its excellence including the NYC Drama Leagues Designation as One of the Best Regional Theaters in America.
