My review of "Grave of the Fireflies"

My grandmother was in Kobe during World War Two. She was a little school girl who had to skip 5th grade to grow potatoes in the school yard. They would feed the children the leaves of the potatoes so that they can wait for the potatoes to grow. She survived many firebomb raids just like in the movie. This movie gives me a visual reference to a real life family story. I'm just fortunate that my grandmother survived unlike Setsuko.

this was the most heartbreaking movie I have ever seen, I cry everytime I watch it. Great job on your review

Even reading the title makes me cry

The reason why you were crying is because this is not a Miyazaki film. Miyazaki is a happy guy while basically his friend Isaiah Takahata is completely different. This film was amazing.

Naruto is waay better!

Really Excellent review! I feel the honesty in your voice, the tone. Your review did this amazing film justice.
Grave of the Fireflies is one of the greatest films of all time I believe. I can't imagine any film being more depressing than this. So many truths about life, how we treat each other, and of course war, are laid down here.
The truth hurts.
This film is pure truth.
I just wish there were more films like this.
I wist everyone could see this film, the world would be better for it.

Hey can anyone tell me if there are any good free anime movies on YouTube like grave of the fireflies? Or any other website that has good ones?

Amen
Fantastic review I have to say, you hit all of the main points that I would have.
Personally I think this is the best work Studio Ghibli has ever produced, definitely the most powerful and relevant in any case. I do enjoy Miyazaki's escapism too.

@King0Jingaling You know what kills me? The same dude who made this movie made "Only Yesterday", which I hear is the exact opposite in terms of emotions. Whereas GotF was soul-crushingly sad, "Only Yesterday" is supposed to be uplifting. The sad thing is that it hasn't been released in the United States at all, so I've only seen clips on youtube of it.

Although it's a Studio Ghibli film, it's directed by Isao Takahata, not Miyazaki.

@MOONFACEx2 Oh, I know. The style is completely different. Miyazaki tends to focus on the small nonessential activities going on in a scene (drawing an old bottle in a running stream) whereas Takahata seems to be more focused on how the human body moves (the little girl removing her clothing before going swimming). One has a focus on fantasy while the other focuses on reality.
