it annoy me SO much that Hoffman and Strahm look so alike. I always thought that it was Hoffman in the watercube trap, and not Strahm.

hm, i guess this scene shows too much of hoffman and how much he knew about the case etc, it might have made the watcher suspicious of him and could have ruined the ending. but i doubt it, that's just with hindsight.
