Here are the sections of this 2004 docudrama, directed by Peter Bogdanovich, that deal with Natalie's desire to sing on screen. I've added clips of Natalie's actual voice in "West Side Story" and the same scene as released, dubbed by Marni Nixon.
I've also added a clip from "Gypsy" (in which she did all her own singing) and her own unused track from "Inside Daisy Clover" followed by the song as dubbed by Jackie Ward in the released film.
Check out my other clips on this channel and my other channel - lostvocals3 - for more of Natalie's own singing!

Great job!

The Jackie Ward paste-up job was the best match. And similarly with THE SWEETHEART TREE in "The Great Race." If she had had longer and more intensive vocal training, maybe Natalie might've been able to carry off the later singing chores. But otherwise, using her own voice in WEST SIDE and DAISY CLOVER would've just come off as too amateur.

I thought Natalie Wood's performance in WSS was great, but there was no way she had the vocal chops to pull of the score. She needed to be dubbed; the studio made the right decision. Thankfully Marni Nixon did seamless job of dubbing Natalie in post production. Natalie's rough voice was, however, a perfect fit for Louise in "Gypsy."
Also, Sophia Loren deserved her Oscar. Watch "Two Women" and see what I mean. No contest.

I think Natalie had a wonderful voice. Supposedly, she was dubbed because West Side Story is a difficult score & they wanted a stronger voice. Vocal range is vast & just because Natalie's wasnt as strong doesnt mean it was bad.
