CLIMBeR (Cable-suspended Limbed Intelligent Matching Behavior Robot) is a robot that utilizes three legs and a winch to demonstrate novel locomotion in the form of ascending difficult terrain. Through optimal contact force distribution algorithms, CLIMBeR uses the winch and two of the three legs to distribute its forces evenly to presevent slip and maintain static stability. The third leg is used for readjusting its stance for the matching behavior.
Ok. Question though, since its a cable suspended robot, why couldnt it have been a rotating wheel with the rotation and winch mechanism inside the wheel i.e. in the rim per say. Even if the wheel doesnt rotate continuously and is a free wheel, it'll rotate on contact while the winch lifts the robot up.
I know thats not the point, I'm just saying if its just climbing efficiency, the wheel would be a better design than a tripedal jointed bot.
