Professional Painter Mike Dean from 'The Painting Team' gives professional tips on using masking tape to protect the carpet. This technique gives you a perfect paint result on skirting boards in carpeted rooms. Give your DIY paint job a professional look. Demonstrated by John Midworth from The Painting Team

" When you're taping up, normally you don't tape up, don't go taping up a window to protect the glass; no, just get the cutting-in right , nice steady hand. If you put tape on the surface, your mind will tell you it's safe to smash and if you haven't taped exactly right, it will creep underneath. Generally we don't tape, but you will have to tape to protect, say carpet for instance. Obviously you don't want to get the carpet when you're doing the skirting board, but also equally you don't want to get any fibres into your brush, because then you'll get a couple of metres down the skirting board and all of a sudden you've got bits in your paint, you'll say "Where's this coming from?". So you tape the carpet, but as with everything there's a right and a wrong way. The tape has to sort of duck down the carpet and sort of slot just under a little bit of the skirting board. and that's done by putting the tape on in a proud fashion, put your hand on the tape, pull it back and then tuck down with a scraper. Best shown, and John will show you how to do that now; but put your tape up proud, put your hand on it, pull it back and tuck down with a scraper and you'll have a nice job.
"So you have the blue tape there, and then you just put your drop sheet over the edge of it, do you?" "Yes, you just put it over like that."
