A trip up Princeton Ave. through the Fuller Pk. neighborhood from 47th to 41st. Yes, that's Sears Tower in the background.

Turning west on 41st St., we dive under the Berlin Wall into Canaryville, heading toward the former Union Stockyards. (The site is now Stockyards Industrial Park.) The building with the spire at Halsted that looks like Independence Hall was formerly the Stockyards Bank. It's boarded up now. It and the stone gate are the only remnants of an operation that once covered 16 square blocks.

A few small meatpackers are still left, but that's about it.

On the way back, we look at some new homes going up on Emerald just east of Halsted before heading back east on 43rd St under the Berlin Wall.

That huge-ass billboard is designed to be seen from the Dan Ryan Expressway. Our tour ends with a jaunt down Wells St. back in my neighborhood. That guy in the orange-brick house at the end is living very dangerously.

  • since when is the railroad tracks called the Berlin wall?

  • @bigfmachine1 This particular railroad embankment, now owned by the Norfolk Southern, has been used as a wall to divide this part of Chicago for years. It even divides our police beat (935) in half. It serves the same purpose as the Berlin Wall did. And unlike the Berlin Wall, this one isn't getting torn down anytime soon.

  • Man, I read that fuller park has the worst crime anywhere in chicago. See "Crime in Chicago" on Wikipedia.

And what car were you driving in that film? Sounds... unique.

  • I'm going to have to start editing Wikipedia;-) Nothing has ever happened in Fuller Park like what just happened in Bridgeport. Some Latin Kings at a funeral started fighting among themselves, and it spilled out into the street. The police were called, and several were injured in the ensuing melee. 11 gang members and their families were arrested and charged with assault. All this happened a block south of where the old Mayor Daley used to live.

  • Ah, Fuller Park. Charming neighborhood.

  • @mientememami You're right. It is, or I wouldn't be living here. Think it isn't? Check the Police ICAM reports for 935E (Fuller Park) and 935W (across the tracks). In any neighborhood, it pays to have a working relationship with the police, and zero tolerance for gang activity of any kind.

"I want crime stopped, but don't arrest MY kid!"!? Not gonna work.
