Cult Recovery Residential Treatment:
Cult Recovery Residential Treatment: The Wellspring Program
Paul Martin, Ph.D.
This presentation will provide a brief history of Wellspring and
the advantages of residential programs; it will explain the
similarities and differences between residential and outpatient
treatment. The challenges of residential facilities will be
outlined—i.e., staffing, business operations, and dealing with a
population that is 70 percent indigent. Wellspring was the first
residential facility to be staffed with mental health
professionals and carefully establish an ongoing scientific study
to analyze treatment effectiveness. The robust treatment
outcomes will be briefly highlighted. The keystone to
Wellsprings success stems from its unique explanation of
thought-reform dynamics and how that explanation is used to
defuse the ex-members distress. Finally, after 19 years of
experience with full-time residential treatment of cult victims,
an overview will be presented of what has been learned and
what can be projected regarding future trends in the field.
