A complete run through of Union, a single player map for Half-Life 2: Episode Two.

If you intend to play Union then I strongly recommend that you do so BEFORE watching this video as it will spoil many of the surprises.

You can download Union at PlanetPhillip:
http://www.planetphillip.com/posts/union-half-life-2-episode-2/

The purpose of this video is to:
A. allow people to watch the game without playing it.
B. act as a visual walkthrough for anyone having difficulty finishing Union.

I created this add-on over about 4 months in late 2007 and early 2008. It was made entirely using Valve's Hammer Editor in the Source SDK.

  • this looks very good, a nice polished map. I'm just a bit...put off by the fact that you used the exact sound files from the game for the vort's voice. I know that it would have been more work to record and such, but it seems a bit odd.

  • @ThroughLidlessEye Agreed! In fact I did get some recordings done for my own script which was due to be part of a big update, but I didn't find the time to get it all finished off and I've moved on to other things now unfortunately. The biggest task would have been all the lip-syncing, that takes a fair bit of time. Thanks for the feedback!

  • awesome map!! I only have one quastion. how did you get rain sound in your map?

  • @artin500 It's a very simple system just using an ambient_generic entity. For indoor areas with rain coming through the roof this is positional. In the outdoor sections near the end I simply adjust the volume when the player goes in and out of buildings. If I remember correctly it's using a running water sound, not really designed for rain at all but it does the job!

The 'proper' way to do it would be to use soundscapes, but it's more complicated and I decided didn't need to go to that length.

  • @LuiDeca As far as I was aware it should set up everything automatically, so all you need to do is launch Source SDK and select the game you want. What exactly is going wrong? Also, you might get a faster response by posting on some forums! ;)

  • sorry if im being noobish, but how do you configure ep2 in hammer?

    loved ur map btw

    liked

    faved

  • @LuiDeca When you launch Source SDK you should have some drop-down menus at the bottom of the first window that pops up. Select the Orange Box version and then you should be able to select Episode Two before launching Hammer.

    And thanks!

  • @CrowbarSka do you know how can i do that when u buy each game individually (like me)?

  • there's a readme file which explains how in detail. basically put the .bsp files into your episode 2 "maps" folder, then run it through the console in-game. readme explains better.
