Illegal logging is one of the main causes of deforestation and causes considerable environmental damage and biodiversity loss. It has serious implications for climate change, often ignores the rights of indigenous people, and make forests more vulnerable to fires.

A significant proportion of timber from certain countries currently sold in the EU is thought to come from illegal sources. Therefore, the European Commission prepared a draft legislation to prevent illegally harvested timber and timber products from being placed on the European market. The proposed regulation will oblige traders to identify the country of origin of their timber, and ensure that timber they sell has been harvested, according to the relevant laws of that country.
Greenpeace Europe launched a campaign in July 2007 to ban illegal logging. Greenpeace volunteers met on the 2nd of October 2008 with Stavros Dimas, Member of the EC in charge of Environment, to present him with details of the campaign "Show the forests some love".

This infoclip included the following:
- cutting trees,
- deforestation, and
- presentation of a Greenpeace petition on illegal logging to Stavros Dimas, EC member in charge of Environment.
