There are five rivers named Rio Grande. Four in the Western Hemisphere and the fifth is in Spain. Of the five the only one the fits the terrain mention (fight for freedom in the sand) is the river between Mexico and the United States. However the Rio Grande is the American Name. In Mexico its known as Rio Bravo. If this is the river, then the song could refer to the Mexican Revolution of 1910 or the French Occupation of 1860 1865.
