how does it work? i mean like you need the muni proof of purchase to show that you paid. I don't see you get that when you use the card. how would the staff know you paid?

To answer your question, fare inspectors carry portable card readers that can tell if a person has tagged their card. You do not get a paper transfer or other type of proof of payment.
