  • How can I download this video ?

  • @extasismasterextasis Other than one of the programs that let you do it from YT, you could buy it from Century Martial Arts - mine was from a tape, but they sell it as a dvd now..

  • shouldn't the title be Sakugawa after Matsumura's teacher? I'm just curious about the hyphenation in the name. I realize that it's on the video that way as well. Shihan is a great instructor and find his teaching and explanations quite thorough. Thanks for posting.

  • @slimeslayer Hyphenation is just a choice in English - yes, I am just continuing what is on the tape, but none of it is kanji or gana, so nothing done in what we use as a written language can be considered "wrong" as long as it gets close enough to the original sound. I don't even know what the reference to Matsumura is.

  • @hempev the reference to Matsumura (Shuri-te) was that he was a direct student of Kanga (Tode) Sakugawa, which as far as I understand, to whom this kata is named after. Not sure if he created this kata himself and passed it down or was created in his honor by his students. Ryukyu Kobudo (Taira Shinken) has three different versions of Sakugawa no Kun; Sho, Dai and Koryu (old style) . Yamanni Ryu also has a version. Too bad Shihan did not explain the kata origins like he does with each weapon.

  • @slimeslayer Considering how many gaijin (and yes, I am one too) can't comprehend the most basic explanation of budo and kobudo, that would probably have been "too much information" for most viewers...but thanks for the info (it won't help me much, I haven't even gotten to this kata yet).

  • I don't know what karate technique Matayoshi Shinpo taught (he died in the 1990's), but Shihan practices Pwang Gai Noon Ryu (although he does have black belts in other schools).

  • What Kara-Te does Matayoshi teach? His kobudo is very interesting.

  • Kata's get mixed around a lot. Especially is one teacher learns it and then moves away to teach some where else, he might mentally tweak something and thats just how it stays...it doesn't make it right or wrong, its called localization, and its unique to every stylist.

  • Nothing in any of these videos is for show. The sweeps are blocks.
