During WWII the Armed Forces Radio Service, a branch of the US military, sent their microphones into Billy Berg's Rendezvous, a major jazz nightclub in Hollywood, to record this live show. They published their recordings on giant 16 inch phonograph records, to be played on radio stations for soldiers overseas and at home. On this October 8, 1945 occasion, the headliner was Harry The Hipster, who had a residency there. This gem was written by Don Raye for the Will Bradley Trio in 1940, who went to the top of the charts with it that year. Harry was the first to cover it, and since then it has been covered by Chuck Berry, the Stones, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bruce Springsteen, Foghat, Manfred Mann, the Glenn Miller Orch, Brownsville Station, Amos Milburn, Ella Mae Morse, and many others. A total of over 100 artists have recorded this song.
