I think what needs to come out of this is there's no basic rules for any of this. Its a question of trying things out and seeing what works. Winsor and Newton doesn't have the answers. Perhaps you need to say this.

@tessey119 In addition to this oil can take up to 6 months to dry thoroughly so a long drying time is to be expected. We are aware that in certain situations Artisan colours and mediums can have a slight tacky feel as they through dry. As time progresses and the colour and medium fully dries this tack will be minimised. There may be a residual tack although the colour and/or medium is/are completely dry.

@tessey119 We are very sorry that you felt there was an issue here. It is always difficult to analyse certain aspects when different mediums are involved. Unfortunately we can never fully advise when other brands have been used as we are not aware of their performance alone and also when combined with our products.

@tessey119 Could you please confirm which Artisan medium you used with which range/colours of oil colour. Thank you!
I'd add to this that I'm not the only one who seems to have problems with this product. Your definition of tacky might not be another persons definition. If, after 2 months you can (for example) throw dust and feathers at it and it still sticks to the painting ... its not a product worth using.

@tessey119 We are sorry if our answer does not seem satisfactory. To summarise:
1. We unfortunately can not advise on other companies products.
2. We only recommend using materials designed for artistic use.
3. We do not advise mixing oil mediums from one range with oil colour from another.
We do recognise that Artisan on occasions may dry with some residual tack. However even with the tack present, the colour can be classed as fully dry after 6 months and therefore okay to varnish.

@tessey119 To give you a more in depth answer referring to the chemical composition of Artisan, we asked our chemist to provide some information. We will forward this soon.

I used winsor & newton Artisan water mixable painting medium for 'oiling out' over the top of winsor and newton artist quality oil paints. Is this now clear?

@tessey119 We recommend against this in our Hints, Tips and Techniques section for oil colour stating that there may be an issue with drying as well. The reason for this is to guarantee long term stability.

@tessey119 Thanks for getting back. There are a couple of points here; firstly we do not recommend using hardware grade white spirit, such as the brand you have used, as it is not as pure as an artists' grade white spirit which may cause issues with the performance of the paint and it's stability. It is understandable to use such products as they are more economical to buy.
