I have followed these directions but am not getting good sound, and in fact I am hearing background noise in the room as well. It seems to be picking up my microphone still. I am plugging it in the mic spot on my laptop, not the headphone jack. Is that a problem? Also, I am plugging it directly into a cassette deck not a stereo system with a cassette in it. Will that have any effect on the results? Thanks

Is it possible the opposite situation? That means recording from a walkman for example, so it would look like PC->Walkman instead of Walkman->PC And if it so... How can I do it?
Thanks!

Audacity IS free. What more could you ask for?

I also wanted to add, that this video fails to mention a few additional steps you might want to take, such as making sure the volume isn't too loud, or removing things like tape hiss. I always adjust the volume to make sure it's not too loud and listen with headphones to insure the sound is right. To remove popping and hiss in audacity you can find instructions at ehow.com

@xxlalcegaxx Well LPs are done the *almost* same way. You can go to a site like ehow.com and do a search for transfer LPs to CD. You may need to get a preamp unit, which you can find on eBay or other places cheaply. Or....if you have a large collection and some money to burn, you could get a USB LP turntable for $100 or so, and then you can hook that up. in this case, USB turntables are **much** better than USB cassette units.

@JesusisLord4forever Thanks again for your recommendation. I will buy a box of good compact discs. A big hug, blesses and success in your personal activities.

@xxlalcegaxx I wouldn't use one of those USB devices. I got one and was very disappointed in the results. (I transfer old worship services & music from church.) If you want quality, I'd stick with the method mentioned here.

You need to have a cassette player with a microphone or audio-in jack. Just plug one end of your cable into your computer's headphone slot and the other end of the cable into the microphone slot on your cassette player. Then push the record button on your cassette player and play the audio file on your computer.
