On Thursday, October 27, 2011, a panel of Duke faculty members, and a postdoc who was successful on the academic job market (20 applications, 7 interviews, 3 offers), discussed the negotiation process. Questions included:
- What does a typical start-up package look like? How much can you negotiate it, and how can you provide justification for asking for more?
- How much grant money are you expected to bring if you get hired?
- What are some common pitfalls in the negotiation process?

PANELISTS:
- Mingnan Chen, currently Postdoctoral Associate in Biomedical Engineering, soon to be Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, University of Utah
- James Siedow, Vice Provost for Research and Professor of Biology
- Deborah Silver, Assistant Professor, Molecular Genetics and Microbiology
- George Truskey, Professor and Chair of Biomedical Engineering

The 2011 Academic Job Search Series is co-sponsored by Postdoctoral Services, the Career Center, and the Graduate School. Questions? Contact Molly Starback, Director of Postdoc Services, at molly.starback@duke.edu
