When I said 'this includes a very large portion of his output' I meant pieces he wrote for musical purposes rather than showmanship.

I don't think you can take a single note out of the Sonata, Annees, Ballades, and basically anything else Liszt wrote, not including the pieces he clearly wrote for showmanship. This includes a very large portion of his output, as large as Chopin's output for solo piano in itself! What an ignorant and foolish statement on his part.

Even in this documentary. He states that Chopin was perhaps the greatest pianist who ever lived, and at another time his playing was not bombastic like Liszt. Really Andras? It is well documented that Liszt was the greater pianist, not just as a showman but in his interpretation. He also stated that you can take half the notes out of Liszt and it wouldn't make a difference. HA.

I agree with marcohorowitz...I personally can't stand Schiff. He is a great pianist to be sure, but also one of the most snobbish, opinionated, and arrogant ones out. Once he makes an opinion, he is right no matter what, according to him. Take Liszt for example. Schiff openly critisizes Liszt endlessly, and will avoid giving him credit at all costs, and take constant cheap shots like everything everyone else knows and thinks is wrong...

@jmanthirtyseven it would put a lot of stress on an old piano to tune it to todays 440 or even 442 as it's done in Europe. Also it's possible it was tunned using a historical temperament of Chopin's period.
marco, too bad you can't enjoy the subtleties of beautiful playing. too many people play chopin overly dramatic, and i guess that you want the typical.
schiff pays wonderful respect to chopin in the way he plays.
and he also is very passionate in his explanations. again, no fireworks for the the simpletons, but respect and silence and reflection.
