On paper, Alexey Balabanovs Morphia sounds like a spectacular epic. A story which chronicles the civil war which ravaged Russia after the 1917 revolution through the eyes of a young, optimistic country doctor; it certainly started off promising but somewhere along the halfway mark it was clear that Balabanovs film was going nowhere fast.
It begins with a young doctor arriving at a remote hospital in the barren Russian countryside. The only doctor for miles, his job comes with great responsibility, a responsibility that the young man seems uncomfortable with. Almost immediately its clear that all is not as well as it seems and it becomes much clearer when a woman is brought in with a troublesome birth and we see the doctor run to his study to flip through a book in search of the correct procedure. From here, the film devolves into sequence after sequence of the doctor treating patients, cavorting with women and somewhat accidentally becoming addicted to morphine.
No she did not. You forgot the fact that it is based on the book "Tales of A Young Doctor" by Mikhail Boulgakov
