I've heard that Bell 214/412/210 etc, have so much momentum in their blades that people have made autorotations with full touch, picked it up in a hover, hovered for some secound and landed again.. Now, thats pretty sick!

True fact about the Vietnam comment..I guess these things we're time tested so a little bit of rocking won't hurt too much.

Would it not be better for the aircraft to skid on the grass? or is this not allowed?

Allowed yes, better no. Asphalt is more likely to be consistently flat and smooth. The skids are allowed to flex outward more on asphalt too, which is what they are designed to do when the hit the ground. Hard metal shoes on the bottom of the skids generally protects the aluminum.

Don't you want to straighten out and set it down flat on the skids?
Seems to me the rocking would but a lot of strain on the airframe.

Probably because the air speed is so low at the end of the flare the natural position of the ship is tail low so the back of the skid hits first causing a bit of rocking. A bit faster at the end of the auto could help run it on flatter with more slide but generally the full touch down is to the spot. Better to have the back of the skids touch first than the front to prevent any "tipping". I'm sure the airframe, skids and mounts can all handle it. Just think what these airframes did in Vietnam.

Nice photos. It's nice to have the "all access" pass. Great quality and composure too. Thanks
