I generally agree with your lacklustre assessment of the Pelee Island wines. Trouble is, most Ontario wineries have focused on grapes that don't really do well in the climate and that have made their fame in warmer regions - big mistake. I'm convinced that the best red vinifera for Ontario is Zweigelt, but marketers hate the Germanic name. Wineries should focus on new interspecific varieties suited to the short growing season. In my opinion, the Bordeaux varieties are just the wrong focus.
Well said in the closing statements, I've been underwhelmed by everything I've had from Pelee Island but I have yet to write them off. (including the gewertz that was just tasted) Maybe at best Pelee should focus their niche on good bang for the buck, low end wines.
