CLASSIC FREDDIE! This is from 1962 with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. The rest of the band is Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, and Reggie Workman. Freddie was just 24 here, and plays his ass off!

  • man i love that turn he puts in there at 1:08. his solo is full of good stuff like that

  • Thumbs up if you're here because of Sakamichi no Apollon~

  • totally great and has unfortunately been unsuccessfully plagiarised by low rent british jazzers even to this day , well i suppose imitation is the highest form of flattery

  • Man I dig freddie, he's killin on this recording, but no one can top lee's solo I'm sorry. And don't hate, we all have our own opinions.

  • You prefer the Cal Tjader version to Blakey and the Messengers playing it? Hmm, you've definitely got some interesting ears...I really hope that you at least acknowledge that the original with Lee, Benny, Bobby, Jymie, and Art as the definitive recording of this song!

  • BTW, I have loved and listened to jazz for 53 years & am open to good playing no matter who it is. I used to listen to Symphony Sid's show on radio when I was a kid and he played a ton of Cal Tjader & Art Blakey back then. All that music was happening right then and it was all great, which is why it still is now. I have about 20 Jazz Messengers albums & love that music. Horace, Art, Lee, Freddie, Bobby, Jackie were Gods IMO.& embodied joy and love, not hate.

  • Thanks. I couldn't figure out why he flamed me, and after looking back to my posts from 4 years ago still can't figure it out. I mentioned my love for Brownie, Booker Little and Lee Morgan along of course with Freddie. I think they were all tops in their own ways and I made some artistic comparisons. Maybe he dislked me putting rating them higherr than Miles in virtuosity and chops, but hey, Miles wasn't God whereas Freddie was close.to being one IMO.

  • This guy's name should be "loser" instead of lousehr. He's just race baiting, and a racist to boot. I said Hubbard's my favorite trumpet player, but I preferred the Tjader version of this song, cuz it's a little faster, and I love this song even more when its played in an Afro-cuban style. Somehow this turned into "go back to YOUR music, and leave OURS alone." People like lousehr are one of the problems in achieving tolerance and understanding in today's global community.

  • Wow, get a grip! Could you be any more of a loser? Probably not!

I sense you are race baiting here, by using terms like "your music" and "our music". Wake up and join the 21st century! I had to go back 4 years to find the comment that you were replying to. Freddie Hubbard is my favorite trumpet player of all time, and you are mad, because I said I prefered the Cal Tjader, afro-cuban version. Sorry I made a joke about Art Blakey being old in every video. GET A LIFE LOSER!

  • I don't speak acronymish so I have no idea what that 2nd bit means, but I get the tone seeing that you have flamed about a dozen other people too.. I didn't even know what post of mine set that rant off, & it took 10 minutes of scrolling through 43 pages to find it way back 4 years ago. That you would read the entire thread & then verbally attack so many old comments indicates that you need to get a grip. That was a discussion about jazz & trumpet playing, not politics! Peace
