The effort to remove the severely damaged, but almost fully contained core of fuel from Three Mile Island Unit 2 required ingenuity, care attention to detail and skillful manipulation of tools with handles that were thirty feet long. The protective, but relatively clear water made it possible to keep radiation levels extremely low, despite the decade long effort.
