It seems the Bible is of two minds on the issue of meat-eating. Perfect example of how both meat-eaters AND vegans will cherry-pick from religious texts to "substantiate" their points of view. For a SECULAR defense of vegetarianism on moral grounds (which, as opposed to "divine decree," is the only rationally defensible kind), look no further than "The Case for Animal Rights" by Tom Regan. I'm confident that you will not find a similarly valid SECULAR defense of meat-eating.

Two of the worst arguments in defense of meat-eating, and very common ones at that, so let me refute each one in turn: (1) So you want to reduce yourself to the moral equivalent of a crocodile, then? Crocodiles and other animals are incapable of making moral decisions. We don't have that luxury, because we're humans. If a race of superhumans descended on earth, and had the capability to entrap, slaughter, and eat humans en masse, would you blithely approve, saying "It's really not a big deal"?

(2) This isn't just about "killing"; it's about CAUSING NEEDLESS SUFFERING when there's no morally compelling reason to cause it. If plants showed evidence of (a) having a central nervous system; (b) exhibiting certain pain behaviors, such as screaming; (c) evolutionary adaptations suggesting pain-avoiding ability (such as the ability to run from danger), then I might think twice about eating plants. But I do not. There's a world of difference between mowing a lawn and slaughtering a pig!

Here's something else to "chew on": Let's suppose that plants do feel pain after all. We would still be obliged to eat only plants, not animals! Why? Because vegans consume about one-tenth of all the plant resources necessary to raise animals for a meat-based diet. To put it in your terms, eating plants actually results in far fewer plants being KILLED--and NO animals being killed. Much less "killing" overall. So spare us all the old saw about killing plants--it's beneath sophomoric.

Thanks to Gary for opening my eyes. I don't care what year this is from, I don't care if it's in a different country. What I do know is millions of animals are dying for our convenience and videos like this make me realize what I have to do.

If you eat meat, I respect that. But I personally no longer have the heart to do so.

veggiemommy0603 I'm glad to hear that you took in what he said and decided to make a change.Gary is an amazing person!I admire and give him tons of credit!Me and my sister met him while protesting a circus.Not knowing that him and other members of ADAPTT were gonna be there.I've been a strict vegetarian for over7yrs,but i know that i need to take that step and become a Vegan.Were having our fist Vegan Thanksgiving this yr.Anyways,your awesome!I wish more people would be more open minded like you

I couldn't finish watching this.Just when i think I've seen it all....I am ashamed to be a member of this so called superior species of human.We will pay for the gross pillaging of animals and land.It's evil,barbaric and inhumane and doesn't have to be that way.I cant tell people what to eat/not eat but there has to be a better way......heartbroken :(

Horrible & shocking. I occasionally hunt with bow & arrow & I do respect the animal like the indians did. There can be a better way that's more humane! These people I just saw should reap what they sow & receive this treatment themselves! That is a despicable sin and they will burn in hell someday!
