Not really. Darning actually prevents that. Notice how the hole still has only one layer of material covering it? Only the very edges are raised (where the new yarn interweaves) but again, this is very small and completely unnoticeable. Darning was invented because patching was very uncomfortable for socks.

JUST WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR I HAVE ABOUT 50 PAIR OF HAND KNIT SOCKS THAT I REFUSE TO TOSS OUT BUT CAN'T WEAR BECAUSE OF HOLES. THESE ARE ALL SOCKS MY LATE WIFE KNIT FOR ME. NOW I CAN RESCUE THEM AND GET BACK TO WEARING THEM, THANKS.

Thank you so much for the easy to follow tutorial - just Great! I just bought a mushroom and decided that it would be better to learn this skill instead of throwing all those socks I have out and buying new ones. We have been living in a throw away society for quite some time and its got to stop for the sake of our environment.Women did this all the time during the Depression. I think we are going to need to do it again.
